The Dark Wind

The Dark Wind is a story of narcotic traffickers operating in the Hopi Reservation area of central Arizona. The story starts with a drug delivery by a small aircraft to the Black Mesa area. The airplane crashes very close to a vandalized windmill, which is under surveillance by a Navajo tribal policemen, Jim Chee. This incident leads to his involvement in the Federal investigation over the missing drugs. Jim Chee was also assigned a case involving the identity of an unknown corpse and is tasked to recover some pawned silver from the burnt water trading post. In order to unravel these cases, he holds interviews with some traditional Hopi elders.

In The Dark Wind, Jim Chee is the main character. He is a Navajo tribal policeman, he is single, lives in a trailer and never drinks alcohol. He was transferred from crown point agency to tuba city. His work involves keeping the law in the Black Mesa area of central Arizona under control, specifically in the Navajo-Hopi joint use tribal lands. Jim Chee is known to be an expert tracker and has been given a lot of cases to solve by his boss, Captain Largo.

The Dark Wind, is one of the many great novels written by Tony Hillerman. The novel was centered around Jim Chee and his quest to unravel the mystery of an identity of an unknown corpse and the case of a drug trafficking in Navajo. To really appreciate the work though, you must find a copy of the book and read it yourself.
