Ann Perry was born Juliet Hulme, on October 28, 1938. Early on in her life, she was diagnosed with tuberculosis and was sent to warmer climates in hopes of improving her health. When she was a teenager, she and her best friend Pauline Parker planned and killed Pauline's mother so that the girls could spend their lives together. Both girls were convicted and Juliet (Ann) was released after five years under the condition that she never again have any contact with Pauline again.

After prison, she returned to England and became a flight attendant. She later settled in Scottland with her mother to become a writer. It was here that she started writing mystery novels. Her first one, The Cater Street Hangman, was published in 1979.

So far, Ms. Perry has three different series that she writes. Thomas Pitt is a recurring character in her first series, in which she has written 25 books. Her second series features an amnesiac private investigator named William Monk, who appears in 16 different novels of his own. Then there are the World War I novels and other books that she has written. In all, she has written 59 books. Her latest book came out in March of 2008 and was a part of the Pitt series.
